Due to its deteriorating condition, Clearmount Bridge had to close to vehicles in 2018.
We started work on refurbishing the bridge in July 2020.
Because the bridge sits in a steep-sided wooded gorge, access is very limited and made the re-building and repair much more challenging.
We had to partly demolish the existing bridge, taking down the parapet and part of the spandrel walls and removing the fill over the arch.
We then strengthened the original structure and secured it with pattress plates and tie rods. Cracks in the arch were reinforced with steel and repointed. Where needed we indented new stone to repair damaged ones.
