At the start of the pandemic Ayrshire Roads Alliance (on behalf of South Ayrshire Council) applied for Sustrans Spaces for People Funding to help make our streets safer for walking and cycling. It was important that these measures protected public health and supported physical distancing.
We wanted to upgrade pedestrian crossings, so that people no longer needed to press a button and risk the transfer of germs. Thanks to the funding, we upgraded 32 pedestrian crossings in total in Ayr, Prestwick, Coylton and Troon. These crossings now have a sensor under the existing push button which is activated by a simple hand gesture.
The work has allowed us to convert these site to extra low voltage, cutting down our carbon footprint.
