Storm Eowyn – People urged to stay at home

Police Scotland is urging the public to follow travel advice as the impacts from Storm Eowyn continue to be felt.

The Met Office’s Red weather warning expires at 5pm and an Amber warning for high winds will be in place until 9pm for the central and southern / border areas and 6am on Saturday 25 January for north of the central belt. People should continue to avoid travel during the adverse weather.

East Ayrshire Council and the Ayrshire Roads Alliance are urging people to follow this advice.  The situation remains extremely dangerous.

Storm Eowyn has had a significant impact across East Ayrshire and caused widespread disruption, especially to our road network.

Fallen trees and damaged buildings are significantly impacting the roads network. There are a significant number of road blockages and not all locations are known.  Due to the red weather warning restriction on travel, Ayrshire Roads Alliance has been unable to attend these incidents therefore please be aware that warning signage is not in place.

A yellow warning for snow and ice is in place from midnight, Friday 24 January until 11am Saturday 25 January. Ayrshire Roads Alliance has identified critical priority routes to be gritted but significant sections of our road network will remain untreated, due to ongoing adverse conditions. People are therefore urged to exercise extreme caution if they are driving.

The clear up will only be able to take place during daylight, and the Council and Ayrshire Roads Alliance teams will be operating across the area at the weekend.  Thank you for your patience and understanding during these unprecedented conditions.

The ongoing issues will also affect bin collection services planned for Saturday 25 January. If your residual waste collection was missed today, Friday 24 January, please present your bin before 6.30am on Saturday and every effort will be made to collect it.

Safety inspections are planned for all Council facilities, including schools, over the weekend.
