Road Safety improvement works taking place on Meiklewood Road, Kilmarnock

The Ayrshire Roads Alliance are carrying out road safety improvement works on Meiklewood Road, Kilmarnock. These works which will be carried out in two phases include the installation of two new zebra crossings, together with associated footway widening and carriageway improvement works, to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility in the area.

Phase 1: Outside Onthank Primary School

Commencement date: Tuesday 14 July 2026
Duration:
Approximately 2 weeks

Works included

  • Installation of a new zebra crossing on Meiklewood Road.
  • Construction of a build-out incorporating the existing bus lay-by.

Traffic management arrangements

To allow these works to be carried out safely, temporary three-way traffic signals will be in operation throughout the construction period. The signals will remain in place 24 hours a day until the works are completed.

Phase 2: Outside Mount Carmel Primary School

Commencement Date: Monday 27 July 2026
Duration:
Approximately 1 week

Works included

  • Installation of a new zebra crossing on Meiklewood Road.

Traffic management arrangements

To facilitate these works safely, a temporary road closure will be required on Meiklewood Road, from its junction with Kirkton Road extending approximately 53 metres north-eastwards.

The closure will be in place 24 hours a day for the duration of the works. Access for emergency services will be maintained at all times, and a signed diversion route will be provided via Meiklewood Road, Todhill Aveue, Wardneuk Drive, Amlaird Road, Meiklewood Road, and vice versa.

What is changing?

As part of these road safety improvements:

  • A new zebra crossing will be installed on Meiklewood Road outside Onthank Primary School. To accommodate the crossing, the existing bus lay-by will be resurfaced and extended to form a pedestrian build-out.
  • A new zebra crossing will also be installed on Meiklewood Road outside Mount Carmel Primary School.

These improvements are being undertaken to enhance pedestrian safety, improve accessibility, and provide safer crossing facilities for school pupils, residents, and the wider community.

What residents should expect

During the construction period, some disruption and delays to journey times should be anticipated. We therefore encourage residents and road users to review the attached plans and allow additional time for travel where necessary.

As the works progress, it may be necessary to implement alternative traffic management arrangements to ensure the continued safety of both the workforce and members of the public.

Please note that the above timescales are indicative and represent our current programme for the works. Whilst every effort will be made to adhere to these dates, unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may result in delays to the completion of the works.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation while these important improvements are carried out and apologise for any temporary inconvenience caused.
