Ayrshire’s Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) took part in a workshop last week to share ideas which will help them to create their own road safety campaigns in their schools.
Held at Walker Hall in Troon, the workshop was organised by the Ayrshire Roads Alliance on behalf of East Ayrshire and South Ayrshire Councils, along with North Ayrshire Council.
East Ayrshire Council’s Depute Provost Claire Leitch and Councillor Bob Pollock from South Ayrshire Council attended the session at which the JRSOs got to hear from representatives of Road Safety Scotland, the Active Travel Hub and Fib youth theatre group. All of the information they learned will allow them to develop and present their very own road safety campaigns for their schools.
JRSOs from Glebe Primary School in Irvine were also at the workshop to discuss the activities they carried out during Active Travel Week. One activity involved highlighting the importance of zig zag and double yellow lines close to the school by laying old school jumpers in these areas as a visual way to encourage safer parking around the school.
Depute Provost Leitch said: “Road safety is such an important issue, and seeing the young people’s enthusiasm for promoting safety awareness around their schools has been inspirational. I wish them every success with developing their road safety campaigns and look forward to seeing them come to fruition.”
Councillor Bob Pollock, Economic Development Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council, said: “It was great to hear about all the road safety initiatives taking place in Ayrshire and beyond. The children present did their schools proud, and they are now eager to create their own road safety campaigns. Well done to all involved.”
North Ayrshire Councillor Scott Davidson, Cabinet Member for Place, added: “It’s great that our young people are so actively involved and taking such a keen interest in this important campaign. We are sure they will come up with some great ideas that will resonate with others and make a difference.”
The Ayrshire Roads Alliance is continuing to work with colleagues from North Ayrshire Council on the future roll out of joint road safety events.
